Lockaway Storage Charity Partner: City of San Antonio Animal Care Services Department
At Lockaway Storage, we care a great deal for our pets. These furry members of our family bring us so much love and joy.
We know that every now and then, those in our community experience hard times and may not be able to care for their pets. This is why Lockaway Storage is proud to partner with the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services Department.
On May 11, Marc and Macie from Lockaway Storage – Shaenfield donated a number of toys, food and supplies the the ACS. These donations will be used to provide food for underprivileged animals, spay and neuter procedures and other pet related initiatives.
Macie saved her dog Jax from being put down in 2014, so this charity partner is particularly dear to her heart. Stop by the facility to see how you can help Lockaway Storage help the San Antonio ACS or visit this page to see how you can help.
Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Michelle Jackson
Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Michelle Jackson, who is celebrating her 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.
Michelle is the property manager at Lockaway Storage – Shaenfield.
Peter: Congratulations on your 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage. How did you get involved with the company?
Michelle: About a year ago I had just moved here to San Antonio from Casper, Wyoming, so I went on Indeed and after that Ashley called me.
Peter: Pretty simple.
Peter: What were some of the things that brought you down to San Antonio?
Michelle: I followed family who got sick of the snow and wind and Wyoming. They wanted a change and I followed.
Peter: Oh, yeah. I bet the weather is a lot different between San Antonio and Wyoming.
Peter: How have you liked it so far? How have you liked San Antonio, now that you’ve been here for a year?
Michelle: I’m still trying to get used to it. It’s very big, but I like it. It’s alright.
Peter: Cool, cool. After a year in self storage, you’ve probably met some interesting people or had some interesting experiences. Do you have any moments that stand out from the past year?
Michelle: I think one of my favorites was right after I had gotten here. I had met a tenant in the office who was waiting for his wife and we got to talking and he was telling me about everything that he was going through. He had lost a job that he had been on for something like 17 years. With losing that job, it meant losing their house and everything. So when he tells me about this, he starts crying, so I start crying, because I hate to see a grown man cry, and he asked if we could pray together and we just prayed and he left and about a month later I received a card that had a gift card and a note for me that said, “I know this is not much, but it is a thank you for being kind to me.”
Peter: Wow, dang. I was not expecting that. With self storage, it’s such a personal thing, because you are caring for people’s belongings.
Peter: Is the self storage property management job everything you thought it would be when you first started?
Michelle: Yeah, yeah. I actually came from hospitality when I left Wyoming. With storage and hotels, a lot is different, but a lot is the same and, so, this was what I was kind of used to anyways. It’s just that instead of renting a hotel room, I am renting a self storage unit.
Peter: Very, very similar. I can see how those two jobs have some overlapping experiences and skill sets for sure. Do you feel like you have learned anything new and what’s it like to work with Lockaway Storage?
Michelle: I like it. I’ve realized that a lot of people are going through a really tough time and a lot of the times they really just need someone to talk to or for someone to listen when they’re renting their unit. A lot of times, our renters are going through rough times in their personal lives.
Peter: For sure. Well, you’re not always at the facility. Do you have any hobbies outside of work that you’d like people to know about?
Michelle: Haha, yeah. My hobbies are my four children. My boys are playing football for the Junior Bears in San Antonio, so that takes a lot of my time that I am not at work.
Peter: Holy cow! I can only imagine. So you’re always running around to different sports practices and school functions?
Michelle: Yeah, yes sir.
Peter: Nice, nice. Do you have any favorite things to do in San Antonio?
Michelle: The River Walk honestly. I’ve been there plenty of times, but for our family the River Walk is the go to whenever our family from Wyoming comes to visit. That’s where we always go is the River Walk.
Peter: That makes sense. Do you have any go-to restaurants on the River Walk?
Michelle: I don’t think it’s considered the River Walk, but it is downtown. It’s called the Texas De Brazil.
Peter: Interesting. What kind of food is that?
Michelle: Steak and chicken and all of that. The first time I went there, they said there was no menu, a salad bar and then there’s potatoes. There’s a cup holder looking thing and you keep it on red, but when you’re ready for meat, flip it over to green. When I flipped it over to green, there were these guys who came by with different meats: steaks, chickens, whatever on this little stick thing and they’ll tell you what it is and ask you if you want to try it. They’ll cut a piece off and put it on your plate. It’s really cool.
Peter: Oh, wow. That is something I have never experienced. That’s wild!
Michelle: It’s too much food, but it’s fun, haha.
Peter: At the end of these, I like to ask if there is someone at the company who you’d like to shoutout. Maybe someone who has helped you in the past. Is there anyone on the team you’d like to give a shout out to?
Michelle: Yes. I will say I want to give a shoutout to Andrew over at Loop 410. He helps me out a lot. I come from hospitality, so I have always had my maintenance man and all of that to take care of me and I don’t exactly have that here. Andrew has taught me a lot about cutting locks and what I like to call the more manlier things, haha. And then Misty and Jason both. I have worked under both of them and they have both been just fantastic. Whenever I need help, I call them and they are there.
Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Macie Duncan
Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Macie Duncan, who is celebrating her 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.
Macie is an Assistant Manager at Lockaway Storage – Shaenfield.
Peter: Macie! Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to speak with me. Is this your one-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage?
Macie: Yep, tomorrow is one year.
Peter: Nice, nice. That is awesome. How did you get involved with Lockaway?
Macie: It was actually a total accident. I wasn’t too happy with my last job, so I was just looking for something and I noticed right outside my apartment complex there was a brand new storage facility open and I thought it would be so cool if I could just walk to work, so I went to Indeed and applied to the storage company not thinking about it, because there are a million different storage companies. Then Ashley called me and I got to talking with her and I thought it wouldn’t hurt, so I went to the interview. Then I got hired. I took the job, because I was so desperate to get out of my old job and I instantly loved it. Actually during my second week with Lockaway, I got a call about my dream job of being a wedding planner and I turned it down, because I actually love storage so much, I had to turn it down.
Peter: Whoa! That’s pretty huge. What do you like about storage so much?
Macie: Every day is different. You’re not sitting at your desk bored. If you want to go outside, you can clean. If you want to stay inside, you can do paperwork inside. There are also a lot of people. You get to talk to a lot of different people. You get to hear a lot of their stories. I just like it. It’s an at-your-own-pace kind of job.
Peter: For sure. I know that Lockaway gives you guys a lot of independence, but also a lot of support, so it sounds like a nice place to work.
Macie: Oh yeah, definitely. I couldn’t see myself at any other storage company.
Peter: After a year, you probably have some good stories. Do you have any moments from the past year that were memorable?
Macie: Yeah, definitely had a few, especially working at my location. My number one actually happened to me last week.
Macie: Yeah, I had a gentleman call me last week looking for a storage unit. I told him what we had and he said he would be right there. He comes in and tells me the story while I’m showing him the unit about how his house was accidentally sold out from under him. I can’t remember the exact details, but his lawyer was supposed to file something to take his house off the auction and didn’t, so his house got sold at auction. He was supposed to have until the first to get his stuff out and this is on the 30th. When he got home from work, all of his stuff was out on the driveway. The people who bought the house took it upon themselves to move his stuff out. A lot of his stuff got damaged. They scratched up his refrigerator. They broke his microwave. They put his bed without a cover or anything in the wet grass. He was really sad, but grateful at the time. You could tell he had gone through a lot of rough stuff. He had an apartment, but it wasn’t going to be ready for another fifteen days, so he’s putting all of his stuff in storage. He came in and I helped him out as best I could. I told him I was there for him and he sat with me for about an hour and told me about his life. I think he just really needed to talk, so at the end of it he asks if I would step outside with him and he gave me a hug and told me that I was his angel and that even though this was the worst part of his life right now that I just made his day. He’s going to go home knowing he’s not nothing. So that made me feel really cool. Just because I sat there and listened to him. That made me feel really grateful to have talked with him.
Peter: That is a really awesome story. And that just happened last week?
Macie: Yeah, it was last week. Actually. I’ve had a lot of stories like that, but his stuck with me. I’ll take his story to the grave, because he was so grateful to have someone to talk to.
Peter: Yeah, it’s got to feel good to help out someone in their time of need.
Macie: Yeah, it felt really good. I went home very happy that day.
Peter: Nice, nice. So, you’re not always at work. Do you have any hobbies people may not know about?
Macie: I wouldn’t say I have any hobbies per se, but I will say that I am a crazy dog mom. My dogs are like my kids. You can see on my Facebook pictures that when I take them to work I bring them on golf cart rides. I love taking them to the dog park. We’re always at the dog park. I’ll even bake them homemade dog cookies. So yeah, I’m one of those dog moms. They dress up for Halloween.
Peter: What are their names?
Macie: My male is Jax He’s my baby, my first one and he’s a shiba inu mix, so he’s a wolf-like dog. He’s the best dog ever. He matches your temperament, so if you’re happy and want to play, he’s happy and wants to play. If you want to be calm and cuddle, he’ll cuddle. He’s just and all around perfect dog. Then my female is Kora and she’s a little firecracker. She’s always ready to play. She’s crazy. Everyone always laughs at her at the dog park. She is always the fastest dog and she always wants to chase the other dogs. She’s my little crazy girl.
Peter: That is so cute. Did you rescue them from somewhere? Am I remembering that correctly?
Macie: Yes, I did. Jax was actually going to be put down within the hour. So when I saw him, I immediately ran down to the shelter. My husband was out of town, so he didn’t even have a choice. I drove there and I went in the kennel with him and I thought that there was no way I was going to let that dog get put down. He’s such a great dog, so I took him straight home. He was actually one of the staff’s favorites. When we were leaving the whole staff was clapping, because they all loved him so much.
Peter: Aw, man, that is too much.
Macie: Yeah, and Kora was a stray for a year and then she was in the shelter for a year. She wasn’t in immediate danger, but she was at a kill shelter. I felt bad for her, so she was a rescue. She was a staff favorite over there too. I guess I got lucky.
Peter: Yeah, sounds like it. It’s so important to adopt rather than buy.
Macie: Oh yeah, especially now with Jax. He’s the best dog I have ever had. Even my family things he was such a great cause. And to think that if I hadn’t seen his picture on Facebook, he could have been put down for no reason that was his fault, you know?
Peter: Yep, that would have been a sad ending, but you saved him!
Macie: I know. We’re happy we saved him.
Peter: Do you guys live near where you work now a days?
Macie: Yes, I live about fifteen minutes away. There’s actually another Lockaway across the street from where we live.
Peter: Is that still San Antonio?
Macie: Yes, I live in San Antonio.
Peter: How long have you lived there now?
Macie: My whole life, haha. Born and raised in San Antonio.
Peter: Hey, a local! The next time I am in San Antonio, what’s something I should do that only a local would know about?
Macie: That’s tough. See, I like to be outdoors, so there are a lot of little parks to go to. There’s a little place near my parent’s house called Comanche Hill. It’s really cool. You walk up the hill. You walk back down the hill. At the very top there is this old abandoned house that has probably been there since the early 1900s. It’s blocked off, but you can still see it. It has a really pretty view on the hill. We like to do that. They even have bike trails too. The little parks are my thing. Most people will know to go to the River Walk, but I’ve lived here my whole life and been to the River Walk maybe five times.
Peter: Haha, yeah. It’s more of a tourist thing for sure.
Macie: It is and I am more outdoorsy. You can take a 30 minutes drive to Fredericksburg and find some really good spots.
Peter: I am right there with you. I love getting outside.
Macie: Enchanted Rock is probably my favorite. It’s about a 40 minute drive. They have campsites there, so you can camp it. The rock is really, really tall and it takes you about an hour to walk up it. Then they have two paths to go down: the risky path and the safe path. I always take the risky path where you have to slide down parts.
Peter: Oh, you have to. Got to keep it exciting.
Macie: Yeah, you have to. It’s not the same experience if you take the stairs.
Peter: How about restaurants in the area? Is there anywhere you like to eat near where you work and live?
Macie: Yeah, me and my husband’s favorite restaurant is called Bubba 33. It’s off the 151.
Peter: What kind of food is it?
Macie: They have burgers and wings. They have a really good selection of food and drinks. They have the best onion rings I have ever had in my life. They’re really good, but my favorite part is, I’ve been a vegetarian for 10 years, so they have a house made vegetarian burger, so I always go there for that just to be a little bit different. They have a lot of really good food and we probably go there once a week.
Peter: Did you say that you’ve been a vegetarian for 10 years?
Peter: What prompted that decision?
Macie: To be honest, when I was little, I never really liked meat. I mean, the only thing my mom could force me to eat as a kid were chicken nuggets, which is not real meat anyway, so I realized I wasn’t eating meat. I started out as a pescatarian, where you only eat fish and I did that for about six years. And then one day I just got tired of eating fish, so I just went completely vegetarian and never looked back. I never really liked it growing up, so I don’t miss it. .
Peter: Fair enough. If it’s not something that you’re into, it’s not a big deal to give up. Makes sense to me.
Macie: Exactly. I like to try different things and there are a lot of different things coming out now with vegetarian food. It’s a lot of fun.
Peter: That was everything on my list. At the end of these, I like to ask if there’s anyone you’d like to give a shout out to. Is there anyone you want to shout out?
Macie: Yeah, definitely. Definitely all of the DMs I work under: Misty and Jason who always have to put up with my crazy questions. Of course, Don and Tristina. They have been nothing but supportive throughout my whole experience. My main one would have to be Marc Gaudet – he was the manager here at Shaenfield with me for a year and he was always, always so supportive. Always teaching me stuff even if I didn’t need to learn it, basically everything he learned during his storage career, so that if I came up for a promotion, I would be 100% ready. I feel like I have a really deep knowledge of storage and it’s all because of him. He’s been really great helping me through everything. Not only a great manager, but a great friend.
