Which Truck Size Fits Your Move
U-Haul rents trucks from small pickups to large box trucks. This is a general guide, and your own load may need more or less room.
- 8' pickup truck: Small, heavy loads, deliveries, and home repair or DIY projects.
- 9' cargo van: Dorm room belongings or a few boxes and a small piece of furniture.
- 10' truck: Couches, mattresses, and medium-sized furniture. A common choice for a studio or one-bedroom apartment.
- 15' truck: Furniture and appliances from a one or two bedroom apartment or house.
- 20' truck: Larger furniture and three-bedroom apartment moves. Good for longer distances.
- 26' truck: The largest size, for bigger homes and commercial moves.
If you're between two sizes, the bigger one is usually the safer choice. It's easier to have extra room than to make a second trip.
Packing Tips for a Moving Truck
How you load the truck affects both your belongings and how it drives.
- Spread weight evenly across the truck so it stays balanced.
- Put heavy furniture and appliances on the bottom so they don't shift.
- Stack boxes on top of furniture, with the heaviest on the bottom and the lightest on top.
- Use ropes or straps to hold furniture and boxes in place.
- Use furniture pads to protect surfaces and fill leftover gaps.
- Load lighter items last so you can tuck them into open spaces.
- Label your boxes by room, which makes unloading easier.
