History Schertz has an interesting history, which can be traced back to the mid-1840s. The founding family, including parents Joseph and Anna Schertz , with six of their children, came to Texas from Alsace Lorraine, France. The Schertz family met Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels on the ship, and he promised a half-acre town lot and ten acre parcel of farmland to any family who pledged to the colony he was setting up in Texas. The Schertz family agreed and pledged to be part of his colony. They arrived at the area that is now New Braunfels on March 25, 1845. The Schertz settlement got its start in January, 1849, when members of the family purchased 600 acres in Guadalupe County for $600. In 1866, Sebastian Schertz , one of the six immigrant children, bought an additional 307 acres there. Locals called the small town Cut-Off, and settlers there farmed corn, wheat, and oats, and later, cotton. On April 6, 1899, Cut-Off had its name changed to Schertz, and it has only grown since. Now, Schertz is considered a city. We’re not kidding when we say Schertz has grown quickly. Situated between San Antonio and New Braunfels, Schertz has had some serious jumps in population. It was home to 18,700 people in 2000, and that jumped to 26,500 in 2006. By 2020, Schertz had 42,000 residents, and in 2022, 44,100 people live here. Two major interstate freeways pass through Schertz , the I-35 and the I-10, connecting it to local metropolitan areas and beyond. A Note on Self Storage You may have heard that self storage is nearly recession proof. There’s good reason for this. During booming times, people have more disposable income and, since we live in a consumer society, they often purchase extra things. Then, they put the things they don’t need in self storage. As a caveat, we’d like to point out that we recommend decluttering. We want people to use self storage for things they need, but don’t need right now. Storage is great for items you plan to pass on to your kids soon, for important sentimental items, for that off-season wardrobe, for sports equipment you use part of the year but don’t have enough room for at home, for business overstock, and a lot more. However, it can be discouraging, and even get you to feel negatively about self storage, if you come back to your unit only to realize that it’s half-filled with stuff you haven’t even thought about in years. In any case, self storage rents for less per square foot than residential or commercial space. So, when times are good, people save money by renting a storage unit for their extras. In lean times, such as many experienced in the last few years due to covid, people often need to move into smaller homes. Even after decluttering, they’ll still have more than will fit comfortably at home, so an affordable storage unit can really help. And again, the self storage industry does well because people will always have a need for it. That is why people is the Schertz area have been storage their things with Lockaway Storage off the I-35 North or Roy Richards Dr. locations which is conveniently located off of Farm to Market Rd. Self Storage in a Growing City With the population of Schertz growing steadily, the need for self storage here continues to grow. Lockaway Storage has 3 facilities in Colorado and 45 in Texas. Of course, it made sense for us to establish the company in Schertz, too. It’s good for us, and it’s good for the customers here who need a place to keep their extra belongings, or storing their RV. Vehicle storage is so helpful for people with boats, RVs, and an extra car or two. Most neighborhoods have ordinances against parking large vehicles on the street. This is understandable, considering that many residential streets are narrow, and a boat or RV can really stick out into the road. Some people keep their large vehicles in their driveways. However, some RVs and boats are too large for this, and many people don’t feel like their large vehicles are safe on the street, or in the driveway. At Lockaway Storage, depending on the size of your vehicle, you can rent an outdoor space for it, or even keep it in an indoor unit. Outdoor spaces are very affordable. We simply recommend you get a cover for your vehicle, if available, to protect it from the sun, rain, and other weather conditions. We also recommend waxing your vehicle, too. We predict that Schertz will continue to grow, and that the need for self storage here will increase. When you need a self storage solution, visit our website .
