Happy 8-Year Anniversary to Don Dodge

Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Don Dodge, who is celebrating his 8-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.
Don is the manager at Lockaway Storage – Airport.
Peter: Wow! Eight years in any profession is a long time. How did you get started in self storage with Lockaway?
Don: Well, back in 1997 I was between jobs looking for a change with my career. I was kind of tired of the travel. Came across a listing for self storage and the main plus for me, the thing I learned from that short time as a manager, was the fact that it’s inside/outside. You’re not tied to a desk. The combination of inside and outside job duties keeps it very active and not boring. It’s a job where you basically get to use all of your talents.
Peter: Yeah, moving around is important. I’ve heard people say that sitting is the new smoking.
Don: And now there’s all the worries about the screen, blue light.
Peter: Seems like there’s always something. So you were with a different company before Lockaway?
Don: This is actually my third company in self storage. The first one was Self Storage for You. Then when I came back to the business, I was with Centurion. That’s who I was with when Don bought us.
Peter: Is Lockaway much different than the other companies you worked with in the past?
Don: Yes they are. It’s kind of in the middle. When I was with Botkin, it was like a one-man, mom and pop kind of operation. When I moved over to Centurion they have about 4 locations and other interests the way Lockaway does. I’ve moved into and seen the way Lockaway has grown from 7-9 facilities all the way up to where we are now. Thirty just in San Antonio. I like Lockaway better even though it’s bigger. Kind of like what I say about San Antonio. It’s the 7th largest city in the US, but it has a small town feel. Lockaway is growing and making leaps forward and getting bigger, but we always keep that personal connection.
Peter: That’s one of the things I like about it as well. It sounds like you’ve been in San Antonio for a long time. Have you always lived there?
Don: Nope. I was actually born in Houston. My dad was in city management, so we moved around a lot in Texas and Oklahoma with that political type of job. Basically I was raised in Austin, which isn’t too far, but I’ve always had family in San Antonio. I consider San Antonio and Austin my hometown. From where I live now, my family in Austin is about 45 minutes away.
Peter: That’s great. Makes getting together during the holidays really easy too.
Don: Oh, yeah.
Peter: So what’s something somebody traveling through San Antonio need to see or do that they may not know about?
Don: Always check your calendar, but there’s the Texas Folklife Festival. We just got finished with the biggest one, which is called Fiesta. It’s a 10-12 day event that celebrates the city. You know San Antonio is getting ready to celebrate its 300th anniversary. This next year it will be even bigger and grander. They’re going to do a year long celebration, so all of the events are going to have something extra. Any of the local festivals or markets, yeah. Those are the good times to come.
Peter: Are there any restaurants people should try?
Don: Again, I’m a big fan of mom and pop Tex Mex. It’s really good, although my one weakness is Indian food. There’s a place right next to the bank that I like to eat at when I go to do my deposits. It’s called Indian Oven. They have great Indian food and all that, but Tex Mex is really the big thing here. I haven’t found a bad place yet. There are so many. I don’t think I’ve hit them all yet.
Peter: So you’re not always at work. Do you have any hobbies people may not know about?
Don: Ever since I was a kid, I have been a big F1 fan and they went and built a track in my backyard up in Austin. I’ve been able to attend all of those races. I’ve only missed two. One because it was rained out. The other one, we only missed the Austin race because I was in Scotland and I was able to drive down to Silverstone and experience F1 on another continent, so that was a really exciting event. The next closest races to me are in Montreal and Mexico City, so that’s on my bucket list.
Peter: I want to go back to self storage real quick. Is there anything I haven’t asked about regarding self storage that you want people to know?
Don: There was a question on your list asking what I learned. More than that, I think what’s important is what I have experienced. When you get to my age, you’ve pretty much learned everything. My employment history has always been in service related, whether it’s mechanical or financial services like student loans or home air conditioning, is that it’s a service. Providing a good service and being consistent with your customers is important. I’ve seen so many things in self storage that I thought I should maybe become a screenwriter. Make a “Real Storage Customers” reality show or something like that, because the stories are endless as to why people are storing. It would make an interesting show, I think, haha.
Peter: Oh, yeah. Endless. Everybody needs self storage for a variety of reasons.
Peter: The experience is really the important thing.
Don: Yeah, and the ones who really appreciate the effort, those are the ones that are so satisfying. They make up for the people who are indifferent or don’t care. Working with someone and helping them through a difficult time, often that’s what happens. Sometimes with storage, it’s about helping someone get over that hump.
Peter: You definitely meet people who are at transition periods in their life and good customer service, understanding, all of that is so important. Those were basically all of my questions. Is there anyone at the company you’d like to give a shout out to?
Don: Oh, yeah. Starting at the top, Don and Tristina have been wonderful. They’ve made the last 8 years a real blessing. We’ve had our ups and downs, but they’ve always been personable enough and one-on-one enough to work through and differences we’ve ever had. Basically SPMIand Lockaway Storage are one of the best kept secrets in San Antonio as far as best employer. One thing I’ve missed lately is that we don’t get together as much. Now it’s a quick meeting and then we’re done. The people I’ve met, the people they’ve hired, they’re very consistent with the type of person and the quality of person they hire, so really everyone deserves a shout out. A gentleman named George Burns a number of years ago said, “Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” I wake up in the morning and it feels good to go to work.

Below is an interview with team member Justine Villarreal, who is celebrating her 2-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage.

Shannon: How did you learn about Lockaway Storage?
Justine: Through my brother. He was working with the company first and told me all about the benefits so I pretty much got into it because of him. It’s a totally different career field than what I was doing before. My previous job was in another customer service field, but it was more robotic, so I was ready for a new position.
Shannon: I feel you. Was working in self storage what you thought it would be?
Justine: To be honest yeah. You interact with customers, but, I mean, it’s different as far as actually meeting people in person. It is better to me than meeting people over the phone. You actually get to meet people and learn a little bit about them.
Shannon: I can tell you really enjoy getting to have in-person interactions with customers! So how has it been at Lockaway?
Justine: It’s been good. Occasionally you come across ones that are having some trouble and then you find others that are leading totally cool lives. You meet some inspiring people, and you learn from some people.
Shannon: Interesting. Can you think of a person who inspired you?
Justine: Yeah, a nurse. She worked in the Indigenous area. She would go volunteer and work with people who have low income and can’t afford healthcare. I think that’s really neat, because she’s working with people who are overlooked, I mean they have a name, but I didn’t even know. So that’s something that I learned, that and about how there are people out there who really care. Those are the kind of things that you come across in this kind of business.

Shannon: Wow that is really touching. I feel like people don’t expect you to have those kinds of interactions and experiences at a job like this. That being said, do you have any advice for someone thinking about working in self storage?
Justine: Just have patience and be open to new things and new insights.
Shannon: Right on. When it comes to specifically working at lockaway, how has your experience been so far?
Justine: Really good. Very friendly people. I love who I work with. Don is my manager here, and I’m always learning something new from him every day. Joann, the manager at the other facility I work at is nice too. We all work together.
Shannon: That’s great to hear! So at the Airport facility, what is the area like surrounding it?
Justine: It’s a very beautiful location at Airport. It’s very nice. The only thing is that it smells like blueberries sometimes because we are near the Sterling Foods factory.
Shannon: That’s not so bad. But I bet it’s good to get away from it though at the end of the day. Speaking of which, what do you like to do when you’re not working?
Justine: I read, I write, I play piano, take care of my little one, and try to enjoy life as much as possible. Not that I don’t get to, but work takes up a lot of time, so I’m able to have a good time here at work and I like it, but in my off time it’s hard to fit in everything that I want to do. But I make the most of it. I like to do things that are good for the mind like nature walks and things that are worth a minute.
Shannon: I feel like that’s a healthy way to live! What are you reading right now?
Justine: Right now I am reading a book about blues scales for piano. Another book that I haven’t finished yet, because I feel like you need the whole space totally silent in order to really read, is called The Keys Enochby Dr. J.J. Hertak and it’s totally crazy. It’s above and beyond I’ll say that much.
Shannon: Interesting! So you play piano then?
Justine: I actually go to school part-time, so I was doing that for a moment, but I feel like now since it’s summer I have time to keep learning and playing different styles. Blues is cool and so relaxing for the mind.
Shannon: Oh, I see. You go to school on top of all of that? What are you studying?
Justine: Right now I’m studying criminal justice.
Shannon: Of course, I assumed you were going into music, but that’s awesome!
Justine: I know it’s so funny. I was planning on doing music business in the first place, because I really have a passion for music. But we’re in a time where you gotta think right, or be rational. I don’t really know what that means, but I decided to listen to people’s advice. So I said to myself, I’m going to try to go for a job that can make me a lot of money, so maybe someday I can go on a nice camping trip in the future, haha!
Shannon: I totally understand! You gotta do, what you gotta do. Anyway, that just about does it for this interview. I have one last question though: do you have a shout out for anyone?
Justine: Yes, of course. My managers Don and Joann are awesome. Good people to learn from. Oh and Don Clauson, the boss of course. He’s an inspiring individual who makes you think big. Everybody in the company is just nice and friendly which makes it easy to maintain the good vibes and positive energy.

She’s the only assistant I’ve had here at LS Airport and don’t know what I’d do without her! Her easy personality is very popular with the tenants and other team members. I’ve never had to second guess any of her decisions. We make a great team, which is why we are in the mid to upper 90% range in units rented, square footage and economic.occupancy. Shannon: How did you get started with Lockaway?
Don: Basically I had been in the industry for about two and a half years prior to coming back into it. In the mid 90’s I went into marketing, but I got tired of it and got back into storage in 2006. I got hired by Centurion Storage here in San Antonio and was an assistant manager there for a number of years. Then along the way I became the manager of the Lockaway Storage O’Connor facility back when it was Centurion. Then Don came and bought both Encino and O’Connor, took me under his wing. Now I’ve been here for nine years!
Shannon: Oh my gosh! Well congratulations, that’s fantastic. Is self storage what you thought it would be?
Don: Yeah. That’s why when I got into it and saw how it worked, saw the customers, and the social contact, I thought my skills fit well with it. Then, when I got out of marketing, I thought, you know what? I really liked that. So I pursued the company to get back into it. I was tired of the office work and the travel. What I really like about the job is the mix of being inside and outside. You’re not stuck in the office behind the desk all day. You can get outside and be active. You get to interact with the customers, which I like.
Shannon: So what was it specifically about the customers that drew you to storage?
Don: Oh I was just saying something a couple of days ago, about how I feel like we are proverbial “bartenders” ha ha! You know, people coming in and telling their stories. You really see it all. I think I could write a self storage version of a soap opera with all of the divorces, girlfriend and boyfriend break-ups, roommates, family deaths, and marriages. Just life! All of those events harbor change that involves moving or relocating, so we get to see it all.
Shannon: Yeah, I bet! Do you have any advice for anyone who’s thinking about working in self storage?
Don: Research the company. Read their reviews. See how the company treats the tenants and the employees. But the biggest tip is to find a company like Lockaway! They are very supportive and it’s very much a team operation. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Nobody in this business knows everything.
Shannon: Definitely. So you mentioned how you should find a company like Lockaway, so how has your experience been working with Lockaway?
Don: We call ourselves team members, but really we’re more like a family. That was oh so evident this past Saturday when we had a celebration of life for the passing of one of our managers, Marc Gaudet. It really felt like a family loss. So this is a very close knit company. I can’t reiterate too much that this is a very supportive organization.
Shannon: That’s great to hear. So there are a lot of people that are new to renting self storage, what advice would you give those customers?
Don: Basically, it’s just do your research. The biggest thing is to do a site visit. If you’ve never done it before, get on site, check the amenities, check the unit size. There are some people that come and know exactly what they want. I have people that call and ask “What’s your smallest unit?” and they have a house they are trying to store. Then on the reverse side I have people asking “What is your biggest unit?” and it’s like, well okay but you don’t need that. So do your research. Find a facility that will let you on site and really get hands on so you can see what you’re dealing with.
Shannon: Yeah, definitely. Speaking of site visits, it’s probably also important to see the area around the facility, so can you describe what it’s like at your location?
Don: Really we aren’t “Downtown”, but we are about as close to the center of the population of the city as anybody could be. Which is just north of the airport, there are tall buildings that are in between us, so I don’t hear the landings. Really on my side it’s almost rural. It’s in a business park. At five o’clock on Friday the business park empties out, so it’s almost like being in the country here. It’s quiet. I get a ton of comments from people who come here during the week saying “What’s that wonderful smell?” because there’s a Sterling Foods next to us that makes MRE’s for the Military, and then also does pastries for H-E-B and places like that.
Shannon: Wow, I bet that does smell good! What do you like to do outside of work?
Don: I like going to parks and going hiking. Walking on the beach, that kind of thing! I just like getting out. San Antonio has some wonderful hiking trails. In fact, there is one right next door. I can walk over to that trail. It’s in the McAllister Park and I don’t know if the trail has a name. It will take you almost all the way Downtown! They are really getting the city parks linked up, so you can just go for miles and miles.
Shannon: Very cool! Are there any restaurants you like to frequent in the area?
Don: There are several. There is Grady’s BBQ, which I think is one of the better barbeque restaurants in town. There’s El Bosque Mexican Restaurantthat I like to go to. There is The Indian Oven where I love to eat!
Shannon: Nice! Well, we’re on our last question then: Would you like to give a shout out to anyone?
Don: I guess really the people that have been with the company that I’ve dealt with the longest, Don Clauson and Tristina! They’ve just been like family. Very supportive and understanding when it comes to working the job. They are very accommodating to new ideas. Having been here as long as I have, I feel like I can talk to them.

Don is a skilled and knowledgeable self storage manager, but his abilities extend beyond. He has a genuine interest in continuing to grow his self storage knowledge (and many other aspects of life) He is fast to share and slow to ask for help. He often finds ways to make operations better, yet he never brings a concern up without several ways to improve or resolve the concern. Don is also philanthropic. He deeply cares about others. He volunteers his time, to help others both with SPMI and outside of our company.”
