Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Joann Garcia, who is celebrating her 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.
Joann is a manager at Lockaway Storage – West Ave in San Antonio.
Peter: Congrats on your upcoming work anniversary with Lockaway Storage. It’s your first year, right? How did you find yourself getting involved with Lockaway?
Joann: Oh, yes. It is. I was actually already working here when Lockaway bought the facility. I’ve been at this property for three or four years before Lockaway.
Peter: Oh, so you are kind of a self storage pro.
Joann: Haha, yeah, but it’s much different with Lockaway than it was before. The property and owner were much different.
Peter: In what ways was it different?
Joann: In everything. Our monthly timeline. We have something set for reports. Before it was just me and the owner. Before I didn’t have anybody else to talk to. I was working here by myself, so it really was just me and the owner. We managed the property ourselves after my uncle passed away. It was just me and him. There were no other locations. There were no reports to turn it. It was just me and him conversating.
Peter: Do you like the way that it is now?
Joann: Oh, I love the way it is now. I do. I love that I have things to be turned in. It keeps me more focused on what I am doing. I love it now.
Peter: So you live in the San Antonio area?
Joann: I’ve lived here all my life.
Peter: Born and raised?
Peter: I’ve only been down there a few times. What’s something a local might know about that a visitor might not?
Joann: I don’t know. Me usually, I don’t, as they say, “do San Antonio”. I like more to barbecue with my family. Every weekend that’s what we are doing. We barbecue. I have a big family. I may only have one sister, but I have 10 girl cousins, 1 boy cousin, and, like, 12 nieces. We all grew up like sisters and brothers, so we have a big family and that’s what we do. It’s normally just us going to a park or one of our houses and barbecuing. That’s what I do here. My uncle is coming up to his third year since he passed, so we’re going to get a pavilion and barbecue. We do one every year in June.
Peter: That’s great. Family is the most important thing.
Joann: For sure.
Peter: So do you have any favorite restaurants in San Antonio?
Joann: My favorite place, and I guess it’s because it’s right here, is Palapas. Palapas used to be on Blanco and Fresno, I believe. I was always over there. Now that I moved over to this side. There’s a Palapas right across the street on Blanco and I am always there. Every morning I go and get tacos.
Peter: I think you are the third person to tell me Palapas is the place to go.
Joann: Mmmhmmm. Other than that, there’s this place on Blanco and Fulton called The Blanco Cafe. Oh, they have the best enchiladas.
Peter: Haha, great. Who are you outside of work?
Joann: I spend all of my time with my family. Like, when I leave here, my aunt invites me over. If it’s not one cousin’s house, it’s’ another cousin’s house. We’re always together. I feel very blessed to have my family.
Peter: Having a big family, that’s so nice. You always have someone you can count on.
Joann: Yes, for sure.
Peter: So you’ve been working in self storage for about 4 years now. Do you have any stories?
Joann: I don’t really have any stories. I know that I have an awesome relationship with all of my customers. I have plenty of customers who come in and talk. Even my assistant will say, “Who is that?” when someone walks up and I’d say, “Oh, that’s Mrs. [redacted]..Let her in.” and she’ll come in and she’ll talk. I have Mrs.[redacted] who likes to come in and talk about her husband. I have my customers who come in and I know them. Like Mrs. [redacted], she’ll come in and talk about her daughters . Oh my god. My daughter this and my daughter that, and I already know the stories, because I’ve heard them before. So yeah, I have a great relationship with most of my customers. Mr. [redacted] and his wife came in the other day after I had hurt my back and she asked if I needed a cane. The next day was my day off and she called and she asked my assistant if I was ok. My customers care for me and I care for my customers. So I don’t have a specific story. I just look forward to when people come in and make payments, because I love seeing my customers.
Peter: I love hearing about the relationships people have with their customers. That’s great.
Joann: Yeah, it can be sad too. Like when I have a customer who has been renting here for so long and they say, “Oh, Joann, I’m finally going to move out.” and it’s sad, because you really do build a relationship with them.
Peter: Dang. Tugging on my heart strings this morning. Well, those were all my questions. At the end of these, I have been asking if there’s anyone that deserves a shout out. How about it, would you like to give a shout out to anyone?
Joann: I guess it would be my assistant, Justine. She helps me here a lot. Especially when I hurt my back. She cleaned and mopped and helped me out a lot. Sometimes when I forget things, she picks up my slack. It would be her for sure.
Peter: Good teammate.
Joann: For sure.

Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Justine Villarreal, who is celebrating her 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.
Justine is currently the assistant manager at Lockaway Storage – West Ave.
Peter: This is your one year anniversary, correct?
Peter: Time flies! A year at any job is really exciting. How did you get involved with the company?
Justine: Well, I was actually leaving an old job of mine. It was customer service and I was already kind of getting tired of. If it wasn’t for my brother bragging about his work and his job. How easy it was and, more importantly, how respectful the people he was working with are. That’s how I got involved.
Peter: Nice, nice.
Justine: And I love it.
Peter: Yeah, I interviewed him a couple months back. It’s nice that you had a family member who vetted the company for you. Let you know what you were getting into before you did it. Do you live in the San Antonio area?
Justine: Oh, yeah. I actually live in the apartments the company owns. It’s been a great benefit for me.
Peter: That is a nice side benefit for sure. Have you lived in San Antonio for a long time?
Justine: I have. I’ve been here all my life.
Peter: I think that makes you a local. Is there anything you think someone traveling through San Antonio shouldn’t miss?
Justine: First Friday is good. All the art. All the creative people who just go out there and do their thing. I’m very attracted to art, so I think that’s something anybody who loves art and creativity would love that. It’s on the first Friday of every month.
Peter: Where do they do that First Friday?
Justine: It’s at St. Mary’s. You’d be surprised at what they put together. It’s amazing.
Peter: Nice. Do you do any art yourself?
Justine: I like to sing actually and play the piano here and there. I’m working on it, so that is one of my hobbies I like to do.
Peter: Cool, cool. So a year in self storage. Are there any moments that stick out?
Justine: There are so many that I can’t keep track of them all. It’s more the idea that while I’ve spent my time working here people have affected me in different ways. Some you feel bad for, those are the ones you work with and help them out. Mainly it’s the people. I’m learning a lot about people you could say. It does have to do with the job, because it’s customer service, but you get a glimpse into everybody’s lives. All types. Like today, we have snowbirds who come up from Ohio because they can’t stand the cold. They like the heat. Stuff like that. I learn about a lot of people and that’s good for me.
Peter: That’s true. Every type of person needs self storage.
Justine: Yeah, it’s crazy.
Peter: Is there anything else people might not know about you that is a big part of your life? Maybe a hobby.
Justine: Not really. I read, write and i have a little girl. I take her out on nature walks. It’s a pretty simple life.
Peter: What’s your daughter’s name?
Justine: Alecelynn. I made it up.
Peter: That’s very pretty. I like that. It comes off the tongue well. You have a good ear.
Justine: Haha, thank you.
Peter: Being a mom is such a huge job. So important.
Justine: Yeah, it is crazy.
Peter: Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. Is there anyone at the company you’d like to give a shout out to?
Justine: I’ve got a couple shoutouts. First, my brother for finding this job for me. Amy, for hiring me. Don, for giving me a wonderful opportunity to work and a place to live and the other Don at Airport and the manager Joann for helping me and coaching me when I mess up. Lockaway Storage on West Avenue Customer Appreciation Event June 1st
We are always looking for ways to show our renters that we appreciate their business. Without them, we’d all be out of work! This Friday on June 1st, customers will have a reason besides simply paying rent to come by the office as Lockaway Storage on West Avenue is holding a customer appreciation day that day as well.
We caught up with Joann Garcia, facility manager at West Avenue, to fill us in on the details about what to expect should you happen to come by.
“We’ll have donuts in the office,” said Joann. “This is my first customer appreciation event that involves food. We did the prize wheel last time. We’ve been emailing the tenants to let them know about the event and also about the food drive we’re doing as well, so we’re hoping to get some more donations that day.”
Joann will pick up plenty of donuts at the nearby H-E-B, so if you’re a fan of their donuts, all the more reason to come by! While a complimentary donut or two is certainly a nice perk, but there will also still be opportunities for renters to save some money as well.
“We also plan to pass out lots of referral cards too. We want to remind our tenants of the chance they have to save some money on their rentals by using these.”
We hope to see lots of people come out to West Avenue to enjoy the event and say a hello to Joann and the team.
Self Storage Milestone: Happy 2-Year Anniversary to Joann Garcia!

Joann is the Professional Storage Manager at Lockaway Storage on West Ave in Texarkana, TX.
Colby: Let’s see so what year anniversary are you celebrating this year?
Joann: This is my second year.
Colby: That’s great. Take me back a couple years when you first applied. What was it that drew you to self storage and has it been what you expected so far?
Joann: When I first started it was because of my uncle. Before Lockaway Storage bought this location, I had already been working here. I had been looking for jobs all over the place and my uncle said, “You know what, we need help over here.” and I said, “Great.” Before this job, I never had much interaction with customers, but now when tenants come in I feel really comfortable with them.
Colby: I take it that it’s a bit different with this ownership than it was your first time around?
Joann: Before, it was just my uncle and the owner, so yes it’s different now that Lockaway Storage runs the location, but it’s better different. For example, now we have clear checklists on what tasks need to be performed, and before there wasn’t anything like that, so people ran it just the way they wanted to run it. Now I really like that we have divided out certain tasks to be done on certain days, so your responsibilities are much clearer the way it is now here.
“Joann does a great job. She was with the facility when we bought it, so she has done tenant transfers and you really keep that information with you. Our management styles are very similar, so I know she takes time getting to know her tenants. She recognizes them when they come in and she says hello and is very friendly. Knowing your tenants is a big plus, because it means your tenants are more to you than just numbers on a page. They’re real people.”

Colby: What advice would you give someone if they were going to apply for a job at Lockaway Storage and they had no self storage experience going in?
Joann: I think it would be to practice patience. When I first started, none of the customers knew me. I had to naturally learn how to communicate, introduce myself, and ultimately creating an organic and meaningful relationship with tenants.
Colby: Right on, tell me a little about you as a person. What are some of your hobbies, and what keeps you busy when you aren’t at work?
Joann: I don’t really have hobbies in a sense. I have a very large family and we are always together, so when I am not here I am always with my family. We are either barbecuing or just getting together.
Colby: A large family is a full-time hobby all on its own!
Joann: It is!
Colby: Tell me a little bit about the area. Is there a good local restaurant around there that you would recommend that somebody new to the area go try out?
Joann: There are so many things around here. You have incredible pizza, which my nieces love. They always want to go to their favorite pizza place Palapas.
Colby: Final question! Is there anybody you would like to give a shout out to that has helped you out in year two?
Joann: Well it would be Don from Lockaway Storage Airport. He is always, always helping me, checking up on me. When we switched to the new software system, he was calling and checking up on me. He’s very thoughtful.
