Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Grace Walicki
Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Grace Walicki who is celebrating her 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week. All interviews are performed by Peter Soto.
Grace is the facility manager at Lockaway Storage – FM 1976.
Peter: How did you get started in the self-storage industry?
Grace: Well, actually it was spontaneous. We moved to Texas about four years ago. And because of the moving, we had to store our furniture before our house was ready. And my husband and the owner of the storage facility – my husband is very talkative. And the owner and my husband, they talked and talked about the slow business and the problems and all that. And then the previous owner started to talk about that he always needs people for the front desk and I thought, “Oh. Maybe I should try applying.” So, I told him that whenever he needs someone for the front desk, maybe I’ll go so give me a call. And sure enough, that’s what happened. And that’s how we started.
Peter: That’s great. And so you were with a company before Lockaway Storage is that correct?
Peter: Nice, nice. So how do you like working for Lockaway Storage now?
Grace: I love it. It’s really nice company and I can see the difference between people from California and people from Midwest and New York and I think California is the best.
Peter: That’s fun. So you’ve been in storage for a while. Do you have any good stories about working in self storage?
Grace: You know, not really. It was just eye-opening for me. I mean, good for the business that people are storing items but I did not have any idea that people take such a attachment to just material things. I didn’t realize.
Peter: Yes. Yeah, it’s a very American thing. It’s very– it’s kind of strange, yeah.
Grace: But, yeah, as for the story you may hear on TV, no, I’m sorry, I really don’t have anything.
Peter: That’s okay sometimes a lack of stories is good, it means that things are going well.
Grace: Yeah, it can.
Peter: Okay. so you aren’t always working at the self-storage facility. When you’re not at work do you have any hobbies or any activities that you enjoy?
Grace: Well, yes. Actually, as for hobbies, I like flower gardens and that’s what I do at home. But I’m not sure if that’s a hobby or a habit. I am a news junkie. So whenever I don’t have time for news, and I believe that does not happen often, I feel like I missed something. I need to know. Sometimes it goes to the point that I have to watch myself not to be such a big news junkie.
Peter: Oh, yeah. I’m the same and nowadays is a really great time for news. There’s just so much going on and so many newsworthy things happening. You live in the San Antonio area, correct?
Grace: I don’t live in San Antonio. I live on the outskirts, back on the east side, and it’s out in the boonies.
Peter: Out in the boonies. Okay. Well, I mean, do you go into San Antonio often, or are there things that you like to do there, or do you kind of stick around in your own area?
Grace: Actually, yeah. Actually I don’t like big cities. I like countryside. I don’t go to San Antonio very often.
Peter: Okay. Oh, yeah, I’m the same way. I don’t like crowds, or big cities, or things like that either, so yeah, I understand for sure.
Grace: Yeah. I like the time of year, like right now when the wildflowers start to bloom and I don’t like the city noise.
Peter: Yeah. So, do you find that working for Lockaway allows you to kind of enjoy a little bit of independence and solitude and you get to get away from the big city?
Grace: Oh, yes. Definitely. Because where the property is located, it’s just perfect for me. It’s not in the middle of San Antonio and it’s not that far from my home. So, yeah. It works out great.
Peter: That’s awesome. Well, those were kind of all the questions that I had prepared. Would you like to give a shout out to anyone in the company?
Grace: I would like to say hello to everybody in the California area that we don’t see, but we read their names in the newsletter or in the telephone list. I don’t see them but I’m sending a big hello and have a good day!
Self Storage Milestone: Happy 2-Year Anniversary to Grace Walicki!
Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Converse, Texas team member Grace Walicki, who is celebrating her 2-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage.
You can ask Grace for self storage help at Lockaway Storage on FM 1976 in Converse, Texas.
Colby: So the first question that I always ask is what year anniversary are you celebrating?
Grace: It is my second, I have been working in this industry for about 4 years, but it’s my second year at Lockaway Storage.
Colby: Very cool. Do you have a favorite restaurant that you will go to, to celebrate an event like an anniversary?
Colby: I see. Hey, we’re in Kansas City, so we love the barbecue here too. It’s always worth a drive even if it isn’t that close, right?
Grace: Exactly! It never disappoints you when it’s your favorite restaurant.
Colby: That’s exactly right. Well, what advice would you give to somebody who is moving to the area?
Grace: I can tell you that once you settle in, you should get out on the weekends and drive the country roads around San Antonio. There are so many wildflowers, and the countryside is beautiful and not only the hillsides. There is so much history around San Antonio going back to 1850, and they will see that in the memorials, and landmarks. History is very important to me and there are some memorials you can read on the country roads, that when I read them I cried thinking about how people were struggling here when they were settling here in the 1850’s. It’s amazing what they had to go through, I feel that it’s really important for anyone to see.
Colby: I can’t imagine living in that time. So what advice would you give someone who is starting out in a self storage career?
Grace: What I learned was eye opening for me. I used to think that people would need self storage, because they just had too much stuff. But it is so much more than that. People’s memories are being stored. A lot of people have memories tied to those items and it’s very important for them to know those items are safe and we are taking care of their memories. It’s about people’s lives, not only business.
Colby: That’s true. There are a lot of memories in those units, not just clutter. Well Grace, last question, and we always ask this one at the end. Is there anyone you would like to give a shout out to in celebration of another year there?
Grace: Sure, I would like to shout out everybody in our corporation. They are all great people everybody I talk to is really nice. I love this company and I would like to say hi to everyone.
