Lakes Near San Antonio & Where To Find Boat Storage
We talked with you about how to properly store your boat in San Antonio, Texas for the winter. That was more of a precautionary post, because you can never be too careful. Even so, there’s still a little more time to get out on the water and we wanted to share a few of our favorite places to fish, swim, tube, and just generally enjoy the lakes, rivers and water holes in the hill country.

Medina Lake
How could we overlook a lake that is only a short 25-minute drive away from Lockaway Storage – FM 471? Just to the west of San Antonio there’s enough water to fill the Alamo Dome with water more than 145 times. That’s a lot of fishing, swimming, and fun in the sun! Medina Lake is particularly good for catfishing, so be ready for a fry-up!
RV enthusiasts and campers have returned to this local lake. Pets are welcomed and there are showers on sight at the campgrounds. There’s even mini golf!
In addition to the resurgence in water sports and leisure activities, there are many trails and hiking opportunities. You can really get out and see the beauty of the Texas Hill Country at Medina Lake. Take the family and enjoy one of the many campgrounds, RV resorts or vacation rentals in the area.
Boerne City Lake
Our favorite hometown lake! We have to include this lake, even though motorboats are not allowed on its waters, because it is in our back yard. Instead of cutting across the lake in your speedboat, you can leisurely coast by any manner of paddleboat.
Fees for this lake are on a sliding scale depending on where you reside and top out at $16 for a day pass. The grounds include a 9-hole golf course and is pet friendly. Be sure to show up early on weekends, because this lake can get crowded. Bathrooms are limited to porta-potties but are generally clean.
Reviews emphasize how clean the water is and that the fishing offshore is particularly good. Those who are adept at fishing by kayak will have a lot of fun here. Other outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy how large the park is. Running and biking are popular pastimes here and it’s only 15 minutes away from Lockaway Storage – Hwy 46!
Lake Travis
If you’re from the Hill Country, you know about lake Travis. If you aren’t, you’ll learn soon enough. This classic Texas vacation spot is a city unto itself and contains all of the modern amenities you would expect from any medium sized city.
Motor and speed boats as well as jet skis are welcomed on the lake waters. Sailing is also permitted and there are a number of boat clubs to join. You can do all of the classic summer water activities like swimming and tubing in a vacation setting. Be sure to rent a party boat barge at some point and get your dance on!
Lake Travis is only 1 hour and 45 minutes away from Lockaway Storage – Hwy 46, where our grounds include a section for outdoor boat storage.
Motorboats are welcome at many of Texas’ lakes.
Amistad National Recreation Area
About two and a half hours away from Lockaway Storage – FM 471 lies Amistad National Recreation Area. This border paradise may seem far away from San Antonio, but it is well worth the short trip. The name for this area comes from the Spanish word for friendship.
Outdoor enthusiasts love it here. There are a number of opportunities for hunters to enjoy the Texas hunting season. Camp sites are plentiful, clean and conveniently located. Hiking trails are numerous and Native American rock art can be seen along the way.
Motor and speed boats are allowed on Amistad’s waters. Lake goers can enjoy boating, water skiing, jet skiing, swimming and scuba diving. When they dry off, vacationers can relax and take in the beautiful landscape while engaging in birdwatching and nature photography.
Canyon Lake
Just 30 minutes from our Lockaway Storage – Garden Ridge location are 80 beautiful miles of rich shoreline that make up Canyon Lake. Boating enthusiasts will enjoy that Canyon Lakes allows motor and speed boats as well as rafting.
When you’re finished being on the water, there are still a ton of activities for people of all ages. Wine aficionados will enjoy the close proximity of Dry Comal Creek Vineyards. The Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country has more than 300 dinosaur tracks on display among its exhibits.
You can also catch a live performance at the Whitewater Amphitheatre or a round of golf at the Canyon Lake Golf Club. Just don’t lose too many balls in Canyon Lake!

Calaveras Lake
Calaveras Lake is an artificial reservoir located less than 20 minutes away from our Lockaway Storage – WW White location. This lake was originally built by the Army Corp of Engineers to cool a nearby power plant but is now enjoyed as a vacation destination by locals and out of towners alike.
Calaveras Lake has more than 50 miles of shoreline and welcomes motor and speed boats of all kinds. In addition to boating, fishing and swimming are also encouraged. Camp sites are also available.
For those who love the great outdoors during the day and want an active nightlife at night, Calaveras Lake is for you. San Antonios River Walk is just a short drive away.
