Riverwalk: The Heart of San Antonio

The Riverwalk and surrounding area make up the heart of San Antonio. Dining, shopping, parades, art, festivals, and more can be found along the Riverwalk, and there is always a lot to see and do, regardless of the time of year. The Riverwalk stretches for over 15 miles, but it’s the five miles that winds through downtown San Antonio where most people spend their time.

Where is it, and Where Do I Park?

There is so much to see and do, that the five miles of Riverwalk that snakes through downtown can be overwhelming. Many people choose to start their exploration at The Shops at Rivercenter, which is the "official" address of the Riverwalk. You can find parking here, or at any of the 2,000 plus metered spaces around the Riverwalk, all of which are free in the evening and on Sunday. There are also many other places to park.

Where to Stay?

Many visitors choose to stay in one of the many hotels that line the Riverwalk. Highly rated hotel offerings span a wide range, from more economical options like the Holiday Inn San Antonio - Riverwalk, to the mid-range Riverwalk Plaza Hotel, to more upscale, boutique style hotels like the Hotel Contessa and the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk. You’ll also find more traditional offerings from Embassy Suites, Hyatt, and Hilton.

What’s Good to Do?

One of the most popular things to do is to take a Riverwalk Boat Cruise. This can be a great way to see a lot of attractions and can typically be combined with other discounts and tours. A popular tour is offered by City Sightseeing San Antonio.

Among the top attractions are The Alamo, The Briscoe Western Art Museum, and  Ripley's Believe It or Not! San Antonio. You can find out about all of the things to do at the San Antonio's Official Visitor Information Center conveniently located at Alamo Square.

Where Do I Eat?

The number of great places to eat along the Riverwalk is almost uncountable, and you’re sure to find something that fits your palate and your budget. For the most classic experience, eat at the first business to open its doors along the Riverwalk, the Casa Rio Mexican Restaurant. For breakfast, you can enjoy a great meal, surrounded by an arts district at the La Villita Cafe. If cocktails and pub food are more of your thing, you can’t miss the oldest bar on the Riverwalk, The Esquire Tavern. When you’re ready to go upscale, enjoy some New American Cuisine in a fine dining setting at celebrity chef helmed Biga - San Antonio.

Just Take it Easy

Of course, you don’t have to do any of these things, as the Riverwalk is perfect for just that - walking along the river. Enjoy a daytime or evening stroll, take in a local festival, engage in some great people watching, or browse the shops. You’ll have a great time.
