RV, Boat and Car Storage Near Helotes: How to Pick the Right Space

Susan Hovey | July 22, 2026 @ 12:00 AM

If your RV is taking over the driveway or the boat has outgrown the side yard, parking it off site is a simple fix. Here’s how the options work at Lockaway Storage - Shaenfield, right off Loop 1604, and how to pick the one that fits your rig and how often you use it.

Why Park Away From Home

HOA rules, narrow streets and limited driveway space are the usual reasons. Even where it’s allowed, a big rig blocks the garage and the view, and a trailer parked on the street can draw a notice fast. An off site space gives you the yard back, and the vehicle a regular home.

Cost and convenience matter too. A lot of people near Helotes, Leon Valley and the far west side have a boat they use a handful of weekends a year, or an RV that comes out for a few long trips. Storing it somewhere with room to turn around is easier than wedging it beside the house.

Covered, Outdoor or Enclosed

Outdoor spaces are the simplest and work well for vehicles you use often. We have lengths of about 25, 40, 50 and 90 feet, which cover cars, trailers, boats, toy haulers and large motorhomes. If you’re in and out every few weeks, outdoor is usually enough.

Covered parking adds a roof against the sun and hail, with a covered 22.5 foot space. It suits a boat or a car you want to keep out of the Texas sun and the occasional hailstorm without paying for full enclosure.

Enclosed vehicle spaces at 12' x 30' and 12' x 35' keep the vehicle fully out of the weather. These make the most sense for a vehicle you won’t touch for months, or one that’s worth protecting, like a classic car, a motorcycle collection or a small boat.

A simple way to choose: how long will it sit, and how much would sun or hail damage cost you? The longer the vehicle sits and the more it’s worth, the more cover is worth having.

Easy Entry From Loop 1604

The facility sits right on Loop 1604, with large drive aisles, so turning in with a trailer isn’t a struggle. Getting a long rig through a tight gate is the part people worry about most, and wide aisles take that stress out of it.

The property is fully fenced, well lit and gated, and some units and the gate use Bluetooth smart entry. You can come and go without waiting on anyone.

Measure Before You Rent

Measure the whole rig, including the hitch, ladder and spare tire, and check the height and width with mirrors out. Go up a size if you’re close. A few inches matter more than people expect, especially with a trailer that has a long tongue.

Write the numbers down before you call or reserve. Length is what you’ll see listed, but width and height decide whether you can turn into the space and pull out again. If you’re towing, measure the trailer with the hitch attached, not just the body.

Gear Storage

A drive-up unit nearby keeps covers, hoses, chocks and camping gear out of the cab. We have drive-up units from 5' x 10' to 10' x 35', with climate controlled options for smaller items like electronics, cushions and anything that can mildew. If you need a truck to move gear, U-Haul rentals are available on site.

Many renters pair a parking space with a small unit. The boat or RV sits outside, and everything that goes with it stays dry and organized in one place.

What to Bring

A government-issued photo ID and a payment method. For RVs, boats and trailers you may also need registration, title and proof of insurance. Insurance or tenant protection is required, and rentals are month to month. You can rent online, which helps if your trip dates keep moving.

Storage Prep Tips

A little prep keeps a vehicle ready when you come back for it.

Wash and dry the vehicle first so dirt and moisture don’t sit on the paint. Check tire pressure and the battery, and use a moisture absorber inside. For RVs and boats, empty the water lines and tanks, and clean out the fridge and cabinets so nothing attracts pests. Fuel stabilizer helps if it will sit for a few months. Cover the vehicle with a breathable cover rather than plastic, which traps moisture.

Cars and Smaller Vehicles

It isn’t only big rigs. People store project cars, a second vehicle during a move, motorcycles and cars left behind during a deployment or a long trip. For those, an enclosed space or a covered spot is a good fit, and the prep tips above still apply: fresh oil, a full tank with stabilizer, and a battery tender if you have one.
