Climate Controlled Storage in Converse, TX: What It Protects and Who Needs It
A San Antonio summer can turn a regular storage unit into an oven, and the humidity does its own damage. If you’re storing something that matters, climate control is worth a look before you sign a lease on the cheapest space available.
What Climate Controlled Storage Means
Climate controlled units are indoors and hold a steadier temperature and humidity than the weather outside. At Lockaway, that means roughly 50 to 80 degrees and 30 to 50 percent humidity. It takes out the extremes that cause warping, mildew, fading and cracking.
A standard unit has no cooling, so on a hot day the temperature inside can climb well past what it is outdoors. Metal doors and roofs hold heat, and a closed unit has nowhere for it to go. Humidity swings are the quieter problem. Damp air settles into fabric and cardboard, then dries out again, and that cycle is what leaves mildew and warped wood behind.
What Climate Control Actually Protects
Wood furniture is the classic example. Solid wood expands and contracts with moisture, and a dresser that goes through a few Texas summers in a hot unit can end up with split joints and stuck drawers.
The usual list looks like this:
- Wood furniture, dressers, tables and antiques
- Leather couches and chairs
- Upholstery, mattresses and bedding
- Electronics, TVs, computers and game consoles
- Photos, documents, books and artwork
- Instruments, especially guitars, pianos and violins
- Collectibles, vinyl records and keepsakes
Electronics and photos are the two people tend to regret. Heat shortens the life of batteries and screens, and photos stick to each other or fade when they sit through humid summers. If something is hard to replace, treat it as a climate control item.
What Doesn’t Need It
Not everything has to be inside a climate controlled unit. Tools, lawn equipment, outdoor furniture, camping gear, sturdy plastic bins and most holiday decorations are fine in a standard or drive-up unit. Plenty of renters split things up, with the delicate stuff indoors and the rugged stuff in a drive-up unit that costs less to load.
Sizes at Lockaway Storage - Converse
Our location at 8401 Crestway Drive has indoor, climate controlled units from 5' x 5' up to 10' x 25', plus a 10' x 30' with a double door. Most come with either ground floor or elevator access. Availability changes quickly, so check the live list for what’s open today.
A quick way to size it: a 5' x 5' holds boxes, small furniture and seasonal items, like a big closet. A 10' x 10' covers the contents of a one bedroom apartment. The larger units fit a full house of furniture, and the 10' x 30' with the double door suits big loads or a business with a lot of inventory.
How to Pack for Climate Controlled Storage
The unit does most of the work, but a few habits help.
Use sturdy boxes and plastic bins with lids, and keep fabric and papers off the concrete floor with pallets or shelving. Leave a little space around furniture so air can move. Clean and fully dry everything before it goes in, since moisture trapped in a box will still cause trouble. Wipe down leather and wood, and take the cushions off couches if you can.
Don’t pack items touching the walls, and avoid sealing mattresses in plastic without a breathable cover. Label the boxes you’ll want first and keep them near the front.
