Climate Controlled Storage in Northeast San Antonio: What It Protects and When You Need It
San Antonio summers are hard on stored belongings. A regular unit can swing from mild to oven hot in a day, and the humidity doesn’t help. If you’re storing something you’d hate to replace, a climate controlled unit is worth a look. Here’s what it does and how Lockaway Storage - O’Connor handles it.
What Climate Controlled Means
Climate controlled units are indoor spaces that hold a steadier temperature and humidity than the outdoors. At O’Connor, the temperature is kept between 50 and 80 degrees and the humidity between 30 and 50 percent.
It isn’t the same as air conditioning your living room, but it takes out the extremes that cause damage.
What Heat and Humidity Do to Stored Items
Wood can warp, crack or swell. Leather and upholstery can stiffen, fade or grow mildew. Electronics don’t handle heat or moisture well. Photos, books and papers can curl, stick or yellow. Instruments, collectibles, artwork and mattresses can all suffer too.
If it would be damaged by a hot garage, put it in a climate controlled unit.
What Doesn’t Need It
Tools, plastic bins, outdoor gear, patio furniture and metal shelving usually do fine in a standard unit. Many people split the difference, with a small climate controlled unit for the delicate things and a bigger drive-up unit for the rest.
Climate Controlled Sizes at O’Connor
The O’Connor facility, at 17402 O’Connor Rd, has climate controlled units on the 1st floor in sizes from 5' x 10' up to 10' x 25'. That includes 5' x 10', 5' x 15', 7.5' x 10', 10' x 10' and 10' x 25' indoors, and 10' x 15' and 10' x 20' as drive-up. The 10' x 20' has a double door, which helps with large furniture.
Availability changes quickly, and several sizes show only one left, so check the live unit list. If you’re stuck on size, the storage types page can help, and our climate controlled storage page explains the basics.
Indoor or Drive-Up
Indoor units are inside the building, with more protection from the weather. Drive-up units sit along the exterior, so you can pull up and load straight from the truck. At O’Connor you can get climate control in either style, which is handy for a bigger move. Our drive-up storage page goes into detail.
Easy Access
The facility uses NOKE smart entry and has gated entry, so you can come and go on your schedule within the posted access hours. There’s elevator access if you’re moving heavier items, and we accept deliveries, which helps when you’re ordering furniture or inventory.
Who Uses Climate Controlled Storage Here
A lot of people in Steubing Ranch, Live Oak, Universal City, Knoll Creek and the 78247 area use it for the same few reasons. Moving or renovating, downsizing, keeping seasonal items, storing a college student’s belongings, or protecting keepsakes and documents.
Military families near Randolph often need it for PCS moves. Read our post on military storage near Randolph AFB for what to plan.
Packing for Climate Controlled Storage
Clean everything first and let it dry. Use sturdy boxes or plastic bins, and keep them off the floor on pallets or shelves. Use breathable covers on furniture, not plastic sheeting. Leave a little air space between items. Our guide to packing a storage unit has more tips.
