What to Know Before Buying an RV

Buying an RV is your first step towards adventure and freedom on the open road – but the process of RV shopping can be confusing, and you may not always know what you're getting into. Here's a list of some things you'll want to know before buying an RV.

How will you use your RV?

The first question you should ask yourself when buying an RV is how you plan to use it. Do you plan to live in your RV full-time? Will you be traveling on the weekends, or just taking a yearly trip out to a national park? Do you plan to rough it or would you rather stay at RV resorts with electricity? The dimensions, layout, and features you need will depend on your planned use.

What kind of RV is best for you?

RVs range in type from giant motorhomes to little camper vans. (Want to know more about all of your options? Take a look at our blog post about the different types of RVs and trailers.) If you don't know which model is best for you, take several different RVs out on test drives; this way, you can try several layouts and sizes before committing long term.

Who will be joining you on RV adventures?

Think about who else will be joining you out on the road. If you're traveling alone or with a partner, a Class B RV or smaller travel trailer could be ideal. If you're bringing kids, pets, or friends along, you'll need more sleeping space, storage, and enough amenities for everyone. Make sure you know how much space you'll need before you start shopping.

What features do you want in your RV?

Before buying an RV, think about your must-haves. Some of these may include:

  • Safety Features: These are essential. Make sure any RV you buy has an efficient security system (cameras, alarms, a GPS tracker, etc.), as well as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • AC & Heating: If you’ll be traveling in extreme temperatures, check that your RV has a reliable air conditioning and heating system so it can keep you properly cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
  • Kitchen & Bathroom: Do you need a full kitchen, or will a small kitchenette suffice? Will you need a shower and full bathroom? Learn more about some RV bathroom amenities here.
  • Storage & Sleeping Arrangements: Make sure there’s enough storage for your belongings. Check and see if the RV you plan to buy has external storage compartments, closets, kitchen drawers, and storage under beds or overhead. If you're going to be sharing your RV with a partner, make sure you test the bed before purchase – its placement, comfort, and accessibility.

How easily can you move through your RV?

RV layouts differ widely. Before you buy, take a walk-through of the inside of your RV. Will you be able to get to your bathroom easily while the RV's in motion, or during the night while everyone's asleep? Will anyone end up trapped or boxed-in by fold-out furniture? These are good things to know before buying an RV. Make sure there's enough space for your children or pets to move comfortably if you plan to be traveling with them.

How often will you use your RV?

If you plan to use your RV often, or live in it full-time, investing in a higher-quality model with plenty of amenities could be well worth it. If you're only planning on occasional trips, you may want to go for a smaller model with fewer features.

Should you buy new or used?

Buying a new RV means modern features and warranties, but it can be more expensive. Although used RVs can save money, you will have to closely check them for wear and tear before you buy. If you decide on a secondhand model, be sure to have it thoroughly inspected; be aware of any damage, and review the maintenance records before purchase.

Do you need your RV inspected?

Yes! Always have an RV inspected before you buy, whether you're buying new or used. Professional inspections can find possible problems with your RV's structural integrity, electrical system, or plumbing. Knowing everything about your RV up-front can help you save on repairs later.

Where should you store your RV?

No matter what style or size of RV you buy, it's going to take up space – space in the garage, space in the driveway, or curb space outside of your home. Make sure you've left more than enough room to park your RV. If you can't free up the real estate at home, consider parking your RV at a storage facility.
