Lockaway Storage Commercial Storage Spotlight: Scott Phillips Of The Christian Medical And Dental Association

If you own a business, or help run one, deciding whether or not you should invest in self storage can be tricky. If you are a non-profit organization, that decision is even more difficult. In the case of Scott Phillips, director of the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA), renting a unit is incredibly helpful to their work.

Scott says that his organization works with students and doctors to provide medical and dental mission support. “We go down to the border six times a year and we take down doctors and students with us. We deliver free care to all the people and all the patients that are in need and then we do a summer trip that’s overseas. We’re getting ready to go to the Dominican this time. So basically we do seven of these trips a year.”

In order to make these trips possible the organization has equipment necessary to their work that needs a place to call home in-between mission trips. As it turns out, Lockaway Storage was able to provide the space they needed when Scott reached out to the Facility Manager at Lockaway Storage - Babcock in San Antonio.

“When we do this wheelchair trip,” Scott said. “We take wheelchairs down to the border for kids coming up from Mexico and I have this trailer completely loaded up with wheelchairs and the best place for me to leave it for a guy that comes and tows it down to the border for me is there at Lockaway Storage."

"Several years ago I asked Lockaway Storage - Babcock, and they actually offered a few empty spaces. It’s a blessing to our ministry because it saves us time and it also saves the ministry money as well. So they do that for us because they know we are a non-profit and they really support the work that we’re doing for Mexico.”

Since then, Scott says that his friendship with Lockaway Storage - Babcock has only grown stronger. The organization even has their own climate controlled unit now for some of their sensitive medical supplies. Scott went on to tell us about a situation that made him realize that Lockaway Storage truly had his best interest at heart.

One night after one of the doctors had visited the storage unit to pick up some items, they forgot to close the door. A few hours later Scott received a call from the facility, who had found the door open:

“Scott did you leave the door open on your unit?” they asked.

“No, I didn’t,” he said.

“Well, we just went by and the door was open, but we closed it and locked it for you with one of our locks because we know you wouldn’t want it left open,” they said.

This simple act of kindness and above and beyond customer service left Scott feeling a deep sense of trust and kinship with Lockaway Storage. “I just thought, I wasn’t in a position to come up and lock it myself, but they went ahead and did that, and possibly saved us from losing some very expensive equipment. That really meant something to me.”

Here at Lockaway Storage, we treat our customers the way they want to be treated, and take pride in contributing to worthy causes in the communities we serve. Be sure to give us a call if you have any questions or would like to become part of the self storage “family”!
