Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Phil Brown!

Peter Soto | Aug 08, 2017

Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Phil Brown, who is celebrating his 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.

Phil is the facility manager at Lockaway Storage – Hwy 46.

Phil Brown is the property manager at Lockaway Storage – Hwy 46 in Boerne, TX.

Peter: Why did you start working in self storage?

Phil: Self Storage has fairly unique working and business features. I was drawn to it because you are somewhat independent but the stronger the support structure and the more fully developed the Standard Operating Procedures, usually, the more stable the operation. At the same time, there are some things that a site-manager is allowed some freedom to do their own way – and this makes each site unique to a certain extent, operationally, besides its specific location and design.

It just has a completely different feel than working at an office full of people from 9 to 5. Everything from the interactions with tenants, to maintaining a property, to doing auctions and even site audits – You just get the opportunity to have a greater impact on the success of your facility.

Peter: What’s the best thing you’ve learned while working for Lockaway?

Phil: Lockaway Storage has such an employee-centric culture and being able to maintain that while also growing exponentially has really a lesson in people; this company has just been able to strike a great balance between a healthy amount of top-down leadership with listening to managers and adjusting some operational aspects based on that feedback. I believe it’s a pretty rare thing and I hope that it’s able to maintain as much of this kind of balance going forward.

Peter: What is your favorite self storage story?

Phil: By working with tenants who’ve had financial problems and taking partial payments, maintaining a good payment schedule – I’ve been able to help people keep their property that otherwise would have been auctioned.

I’ve also been able to help coordinate some donations to charitable organizations.

Peter: What are your hobbies when you aren’t at your facility?

Phil: I’m a Rock Singer/Songwriter/Multi-Instrumentalist/Producer. I’ve played in 12 bands, written, recorded and produced 7 CD’s, currently working on my 8th.

Peter: What’s your favorite thing to do in Boerne?

Phil: Boerne is growing so fast, but it’s still a great little town in the Texas Hill Country. Whether it’s hanging at the beautiful walking park by the river or taking our grandson to the pool or checking out a new eating place, always something interesting.

Lockaway Storage – Hwy 46 has a building at the front of the facility that is not behind the gate – which also means easy 24-hour access.

Peter: What’s your favorite restaurant in Boerne?

Phil: Boerne has some great eating places, 2 favorites are Sarikas Thai Café at 109 Waterview Parkway. Be careful on the spicy level though – It’s real Thai food! Then stop by Kelani Yogurt for dessert

Peter: Would you like to give a shout-out to anybody?

Phil: I would like to shout-out to Patrick Bock in Bastrop Texas. He was my Assistant Manager at U-Lock-It Self Storage in Cedar Creek Texas and He recently signed on with Store-It-All Storage as the Manager at the Del Valle Texas location – Congrats Patrick!
