A Guide to Winterizing Your Boat

Lockaway Storage | December 10, 2024 @ 12:00 AM

When the winter chill sets in, it's time to get your boat ready for its seasonal hibernation. Winterizing your boat is more than just putting it away until warmer weather arrives: it's about protecting it from inclement weather that might potentially ruin your vessel's interior workings. This is a thorough guide to make sure your boat survives winter and is prepared to go out on the water again when spring arrives.

1. Remove Water and Add Antifreeze

In the winter, standing water on a boat can spell disaster. Avoid the possibility of expensive damage to your boat by emptying all water from plumbing and engine cooling systems so it doesn't freeze, possibly ruining your pipes. Flush the system with fresh water and then circulate antifreeze through your engine and plumbing systems, especially if you live in an area with exceptionally cold winters. Run antifreeze via the cooling system for inboard motors. If you have an outboard motor, however, omit this step to prevent needless problems.

2. Fog Your Engine

Use fogging to shield your engine from corrosion caused by moisture. Give internal engine parts an oil coating using a spray bottle. To offer complete protection for EFI engines, run gas treated with EFI fogging oil through the motor.

3. Stabilize Fuel

By stabilizing the gasoline, you can stop fungus and mold from growing in your fuel system. To ensure that the stabilized fuel is distributed throughout the system, add stabilizer to your outboard engine and run it for a few minutes. Steer clear of ethanol-blended fuel since this may result in fuel that is water-saturated in the spring and phase separation.

4. Drain Cooking Gas

It's important to remember the cooking gas! To remove butane or propane from your yacht, turn on all of the burners and the solenoid until the flames go out. Disconnect the propane tank if it's still full to avoid any possible risks.

5. Clean Inside and Out

Give your boat a thorough cleaning on the inside and outside to stop the formation of mold and mildew while it is hibernating for the winter. Take out any papers, cushions, and other mold-prone materials. After giving the hull a pressure wash to get rid of dirt and barnacles, apply a protective wax coat to preserve its flawless appearance.

6. Cover Your Boat

Invest in a high-quality cover to protect your boat from the weather. For the best protection, use a custom-fitted cover made of sturdy fabrics like acrylic or polyester. Not only does a well-fitting cover protect against scratches, but it also keeps moisture and dirt out.

7. Regular Check-Ups

Don't completely neglect your boat throughout the winter. Plan routine check-ups to make sure everything is in working order and to quickly fix any problems. Frequent inspections can stop little issues from growing into expensive fixes.

You can protect your investment and make sure your boat is prepared to go when the weather warms up by following these crucial winterization instructions. Don't let the wintertime cold sap your enthusiasm for the water; instead, get your vessel ready for a seamless transition into the upcoming season.
