Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Christy Ornelas
Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with Texarkana team member Christy Ornelas, who is celebrating her 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week.
Christy is the manager at Lockaway Storage – Nash.
Peter: Your one year anniversary is coming up soon and you’ve probably seen a lot during that year. Before we get into that, how did you get involved with Lockaway Storage?
Christy: Originally I worked mostly in health care.I got my massage therapy license back in 2007, but I was always interested in property management. So I just saw a position open at this facility and I applied and I actually got lucky and got the position.
Peter: That’s awesome. Sounds like you’re a real go-getter.
Christy: Thank you.
Peter: People don’t normally think about it, but managing a self storage facility is running a small business.Have you found that to be the case?
Christy: Definitely. It really is. You have to treat it like your own. Especially with the customers, you know? Just make them feel at home basically.
Peter: Do they give you a lot of freedom to do things how you see fit?
Christy: When I first started, it was very laid back and I could make more decisions by myself. Now, with Lockaway, there is more structure. I like that there’s structure.
Peter: Yeah, that’s awesome. Structure is important. Well, you’re not always at the facility, do you live in the Texarkana area?
Christy: I sure do.
Peter: Have you been there for a while or are you new to the area?
Christy: I’ve lived here most of my life. I’ve lived in a couple other places: Washington D.C. and St. Louis. I lived in St. Louis the longest, for about five years.
Peter: What brought you back to Texarkana?
Christy: I came back here basically because of my family. I have a big family, so I decided to come back here instead of stay in St. Louis.
Peter: Oh, yeah. Family is one of the most important things for sure.
Peter: Well, cool. You’ve been in Texarkana now more than anywhere else. That basically makes you a local. Is there anything people who are new to the area need to know about?
Christy: The downtown area is really nice. Just the history of it. They have lots of events down there and different stuff to raise money and promote things.
Peter: As far as restaurants go, do you have any local favorites?
Christy: I do, I eat at Tamales here quite a bit, but I do love Texas Road House. That is very good food.
Peter: I am also a sucker for a good steak.
Peter: Do you have any hobbies outside of work people may not know about?
Christy: Not really. Basically just hang out with my dog. Like I said before, I started bootcamp and I’m trying to stick with that. Trying to get more fit.
Peter: That is important for sure.
Christy: Yeah, you know, stop sitting around at home so much and do something. Haha!
Peter: Haha, yeah. You must get outside with your dog though?
Christy: Yeah, we do. We actually go downtown quite a bit. I live close to downtown on Main Street,
Peter: There you go. That’s nice and walkable. What’s your dog’s name and what kind of dog is he?
Christy: His name is Hercules and he’s a catahoula and mastiff mix. He’s about a hundred pounds. He’s pretty big.
Peter: I love a big, cuddly dog. Those are the best.
Christy: He’s a big baby.
Peter: Haha. that’s great. Is there anybody at the company you’d like to give a shout out to?
Christy: Yeah, I would like to give a shout out to Ann and Ashley for being so understanding and there for us always.

Nash Customer Appreciation Day Saturday June 2nd
Here at Lockaway Storage, we try our best to find ways to show our appreciation to our customers, and the Nash location is not different. This Saturday, June 2nd, the team at Nash will host a customer appreciation day for customers or prospective customers to come by and enjoy.
We spoke with Christy Ornelas, facility manager at Nash, to fill us in on the details of the event.
“It’s going to start at 8AM and run until 10AM,” said Christy. “We will have snacks and refreshments available in the office for anyone that drops by.”
In addition to this, Nash will also hold a sale, which is a consistently popular event here at Lockaway.
“We’re doing a mini sidewalk sale,” said Christy. “We have a few tenants with a ton of stuff. That will last from 8AM until maybe noon depending on what happens with it.”
Giving tenants an opportunity to make some money by selling some stored items is a great way to not only help them, but also provide shoppers an opportunity to pick up something of use and check out the facility grounds at the same time. One tenant is planning on donating her earnings to a worthy cause, according to Christy.
“We have one lady who raises money for veterans to help them whatever they need, whether it be food, medicine, whatever is needed. She just wants to help do what she can to help them out in times of need.”
